The Merchant – Rum, Mystery and More!

Just A Few Blocks from the Harbor

Situated in historic downtown Salem,  The Merchant offers 11 cozy rooms with plush linens, stylish decor and modern amenities such as iPads, Apple TV, gas fireplaces and so much more!

A lovely boutique inn, this well preserved, brick mansion was commissioned by sea merchant Joshua Ward in 1784 and designed by noted architect Samuel McIntire.    Along the way, newly re-elected George Washington visited Salem to address the troops and spent the night in what is the now the George Washington King Deluxe Room.  For real.  History buffs will surely love this place and so will lobster lovers since some of Salem’s best seafood restaurants are within walking distance of this spacious. clean and comfortable property.

Why we love it:  A “wicked” cool place to stay!  It’s tagline, “Rum, Pepper and a Little Mystery” serves it well.
